Transgenderism is the correct term. Transsexualism is an outdated term that is no longer used by medical professionals. Transgender people are people who identify as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. This can be either a man who identifies as a woman, or a woman who identifies as a man. Transgender people may or may not undergo surgery and hormone therapy to transition to their preferred gender.
