There are many ways that you can be transgender without surgery. You can identify as a man or woman, dress in a masculine or feminine way, and wear clothes designed for the gender you identify with.
You can also choose to change your name to one that is traditionally associated with the gender you identify with. You may also want to change your pronouns. Some people will use "he" for a girl who identifies as male and "she" for a boy who identifies as female.
The term transgender is a broad term that encompasses a wide range of individuals with different gender identities and gender expressions. Transgender people may or may not choose to alter their physical appearance through medical interventions such as hormone therapy, sex reassignment surgery, hair removal, or clothing changes.
Some people who identify as transgender prefer to be called by the pronouns they/them/their instead of he/him/his or she/her/hers.
