The Complete Guide to Transgender Terminology: What are the Differences Between Transsexual and Transvestite

What is a Transsexual and what is a Transvestite?

A Transsexual is a person who does not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth. They may change their body by taking hormones or have surgery in order to live as the gender they identify with.

A Transvestite is a person who dresses and lives as the opposite gender, but doesn't want to change their body.

Transsexuals and transvestites are often confused for each other because of the similarities in their dress. However, they are different in that transvestites do not want to change their body while transsexuals do.

What does Transgender Mean?

Transgender is an umbrella term for people who have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex.

The term may include but is not limited to: transsexuals, cross-dressers, and other gender-variant people. Transgender people may identify as female-to-male (FTM), male-to-female (MTF), neither male nor female, or as queer. Transgender people may express their gender in a variety of ways, including through dressing in clothes typically associated with the opposite sex; wearing make up, hair styles and accessories; talking in a style which is typically associated with the opposite sex; and by changing their name to one which is typically associated with the opposite sex.

What is Gender Dysphoria and How to Treat it With Medical Interventions

Gender Dysphoria is a condition in which a person's assigned gender conflicts with their actual gender. It is often characterized by depression, anxiety, and stress.

In the past, people with gender dysphoria had to undergo sex reassignment surgery to change their external appearance in order to match their internal identity. This can be expensive and may not be available for everyone.

Gender dysphoria treatment has changed over the years as more medical interventions have become available. These treatments are less invasive and more affordable than surgery.
